The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has confirmed the arrest of popular social media influencer, Martins Otse, also known as VeryDarkMan, over multiple petitions.
EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, told BBC News Pidgin on Monday, May 5, that the arrest followed complaints from different people who accused the activist of cyberstalking.
“We arrested him to respond to a series of allegations raised against him by some petitioners,” Oyewale said.
He explained that the EFCC is currently processing the case and will take it to court soon. “We will release him when he meets the bail conditions, and we will take the case to court as soon as possible; we are law-abiding,” he added.
When asked if the arrest had anything to do with Guaranty Trust Bank, Oyewale said the petitions came from different individuals, not from the bank. He also stressed that the EFCC has a duty to protect those who report such cases.
The arrest has sparked protests and reactions online, with many of VeryDarkMan’s fans demanding his release using the hashtag #FreeVDM.
