The Federal University, Gashua in Yobe State has received a valuable donation of Geographic Information System and Remote Sensing Technology equipment from the World Bank.

The project was funded by the World Bank program through the Multi-Sectoral Crisis Recovery Project of the North East Development Commission.

The equipment which includes projectors, television monitors, printers, digitizers, GPS units, sensors, and more was officially handed over to the Geography department of the university, with Professor Maimuna Waziri, the Vice-Chancellor, receiving the donation.

Prof. Maimuna expressed her gratitude for the donation, emphasizing the positive impact it will have on the university’s capacity to monitor the environment, study climate change impacts, and manage natural disasters such as fire, droughts, flooding, freshwater availability, evapotranspiration, and crop yields.

She explained that this technology will help combat desertification, improve the livelihoods and security of the region, and facilitate research to mitigate the devastating effects of flooding, which often results in loss of lives and damage to critical infrastructure.

“I sincerely want to extend my profound gratitude on behalf of the Senate, management, and the entire staff and students of Federal University Gashua, especially those at the Geography department, for the wonderful gesture from the World Bank and the MCRP team,” the VC stated.

While appreciating the World Bank for their generosity, the Vice-Chancellor urged the Geography department to use the equipment for their intended purpose, which is to enhance teaching, research, and technology application in addressing societal challenges.

The handover ceremony was attended by other university officials, including Dr. Ahmed Ibrahim Jajere, Deputy Vice–Chancellor of academic services, Dr. Lawrence Ejeh Udeh, Head of the Geography department, and Mohammed Musa Machina, the University Auditor.
