Waje clears air on dating rumours with MI

Singer Aituaje Iruobe, popularly known as Waje, has dismissed long-standing rumours that she once dated rapper M.I Abaga.

Speaking on the latest episode of ‘The Honest Bunch’ podcast, the 45-year-old singer said the speculation began after their 2010 collaboration on the hit track ‘One Naira’, which had a strong romantic theme.

“Because of the rollout and romantic theme of my song with M.I, *One Naira*, a lot of people assumed we were dating,” Waje said. “But we never dated. We were just friends who saw how great a love story could be in a song, so we created characters to drive the story.”

She also revealed that M.I’s then-girlfriend was the one who did the voice-over in the song, not her.

According to the singer, the public mistook their musical chemistry for a real-life romance, even though their connection was purely professional.

“We were just working together. People read too much meaning into what they saw in the video,” she explained.

Waje, who has kept her love life private over the years, said she is currently single and focused on her personal growth.

“I’m not in my 20s anymore, so I can’t waste time trying to build a man. I want someone who already has his life together,” she said.

She added that while she values companionship, she prefers a partner who is emotionally and financially stable.

Waje became a single mother at 18 and has since kept the identity of her daughter’s father private.

In 2021, she was also linked to singer Ric Hassani after they shared romantic-looking photos, but she later clarified that it was a publicity stunt tied to their musical collaboration.
