The West African Examination Council has derecognised 13 schools and blacklisted 14 supervisors in Kogi State over involvement in examination malpractices during the 2023/2024 exams.
Kogi State Commissioner for Education, Wemi Jones, announced this on Tuesday in Lokoja during a meeting with principals and supervisors implicated by WAEC.
Jones warned that principals, teachers, and supervisors aiding exam malpractices would face prosecution under the Kogi State Education Law and Other Matters Connected Therewith, 2020.
“Examination malpractice is a criminal offence and will be treated as such. A committee led by the Permanent Secretary will investigate those implicated by WAEC, and anyone found guilty will be prosecuted in court,” he stated.
Jones stressed that the state government has invested heavily in education and will not allow the actions of a few individuals to undermine the sector’s progress.
Speaking at the meeting, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Dr. Jibrin Seidu Alhaji, urged educators to stop practices that harm students’ futures and tarnish the state’s image.
“Your actions are not just robbing the state but destroying the future of the students. While some teachers are being celebrated with awards, others are being condemned for malpractice. This is a shame and must stop,” Dr. Jibrin said.
He described teachers involved in malpractices as “cheats” and warned that those found culpable would face strict sanctions.
