Super Eagles striker, Victor Boniface, stirred reactions on social media after joking about retiring from international football following Nigeria’s 1-1 draw against Russia on Friday.

Boniface featured in the starting lineup for Eric Chelle’s side in the friendly match held in Moscow but was substituted in the 61st minute.

His replacement, Tolu Arokodare, went on to score the equalising goal for Nigeria.

Shortly after the match, the 24-year-old took to Instagram to announce what appeared to be his retirement from the national team.

He wrote, “Proud to play for my country and a dream for me also. Really enjoyed every moment, the good and the bad. Thanks a lot. Thank you all. I don hang boot.”

The post was deleted minutes later, and Boniface followed it up with a meme, indicating the initial statement was made in jest.

The Bayer Leverkusen forward is known for his humorous and often sarcastic social media presence.

Since making his debut for the Super Eagles on September 10, 2023, Boniface is yet to score for the national team.
