Veteran US actor George Wendt dies at 76

Veteran American actor, George Wendt, widely celebrated for his role as Norm Peterson on the hit sitcom Cheers, has passed away at the age of 76.

His publicist, Melissa Nathan, confirmed the news in a statement, noting that Wendt died “peacefully in his sleep” at home.

Remembering the actor, the statement described him as a “devoted family man and cherished friend” who will be “deeply missed.” The family has requested privacy during this time.

“Beloved actor and comedian, George Wendt, best known for starring in the NBC hit comedy Cheers, has passed away,” the statement read. “George’s family confirmed the news of his death early Tuesday morning, announcing he died peacefully in his sleep while at home. George was a doting family man, a well-loved friend and confidant to all of those lucky enough to have known him. He will be missed forever. The family has requested privacy during this time.”

Tributes poured in from colleagues and fans alike. Comedian Jeff Ross shared a heartfelt message via Instagram, recalling Wendt’s warmth and dedication even during health challenges. “I was lucky enough to spend quality time talking with George Wendt a year ago at @bigslickkc annual event benefiting Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City,” Ross wrote. “He wasn’t feeling his best, but he still rose to the occasion and made thousands of people laugh a lot for a great cause.”

Actress Melissa Joan Hart also paid tribute to the late actor. Sharing her memories on Instagram, she wrote: “Heaven just got a little funnier. It was a thrill to work beside him on Sabrina the Teenage Witch for a handful of episodes. I was a big Cheers fan and knew I was among one of the best when he was on set. He was warm, professional and kind and our cast and crew were gifted with his presence every time. Rest in peace!”

Wendt began his acting career in 1974, training in comedy at Chicago’s iconic The Second City theater. His early work included roles in films like My Bodyguard (1980) and appearances on TV series such as Taxi, Soap, and MASH*.

His big break came in 1982 when he was cast as Norm Peterson in Cheers. Wendt appeared in all 275 episodes of the series, which ran until 1993, and earned six consecutive Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.

Wendt met his wife, Bernadette Birkett, during his time at The Second City. The couple married in 1978 and had three children: Hilary, Joe, and Daniel.

Wendt’s legacy as a beloved television icon and a respected figure in comedy will continue to live on through his work and the memories shared by those who knew and admired him.
