The death toll from the twin earthquakes that struck Venezuela has risen to 2,954, with more than 16,000 people injured and thousands still unaccounted for.

According to AFP, the latest official figures released on Saturday showed the number of fatalities had increased by more than 300 since Friday, following the powerful 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes that hit the country on June 24.

The disaster has left more than 16,000 people homeless and destroyed about 190 buildings, most of them in the coastal state of La Guaira, north of the capital, Caracas.

Ten days after the devastating earthquakes, rescue teams have begun winding down search operations for survivors as families continue efforts to recover the bodies of loved ones trapped beneath the rubble.

Although the critical 72-hour rescue window has passed, a small number of survivors have still been found alive in recent days.
