Valuejet pilots suspended after ‘reckless’ takeoff move in Abuja

Two ValueJet pilots have been suspended for starting takeoff procedures at Abuja airport without getting proper clearance, a move aviation authorities described as dangerous and reckless.

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority said the pilots, Captain Oluranti Ogoyi and First Officer Ivan Oloba, began departure from a designated bay at the domestic terminal of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport without first receiving the green light required under aviation rules.

In a statement released on Tuesday, August 5, the NCAA said the move violated both Nigerian and international safety laws and put ground staff and other airport users at serious risk.

“The pilot in question commenced departure procedures from the designated bay without adhering to the mandatory pre-departure clearance protocols,” said Michael Achimugu, NCAA’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection.

“This reckless action endangered the safety of ground personnel and other airport users, contravening established civil aviation regulations and international safety standards.”

The NCAA said both pilots have had their licences suspended while a full investigation is carried out.

“The Authority has taken immediate enforcement action by suspending the licences of the pilot, Captain Oluranti Ogoyi, and the co-pilot, First Officer Ivan Oloba with immediate effect,” the statement read.

“This suspension will remain in place pending the conclusion of a full investigation into the incident.”

Achimugu said the aviation regulator is treating the matter with the “utmost seriousness” and promised further action if necessary.
