The United States called on the Nigerian government to take concrete actions in response to human rights concerns, particularly the implementation of #EndSARS panel reports investigating human rights abuses during the 2020 #EndSARS protests.

This call was made during the United Nations Human Rights Council 4th cycle Universal Period Review of Nigeria in Geneva, Switzerland,

A representative of the US government emphasized the need for Nigeria to address restrictions on the enjoyment of human rights.

She recommended, “In the spirit of constructive engagement, we recommend that Nigeria implement recommendations from state-level investigations panel reports on security forces’ response to the #EndSARS protests, including prosecution as appropriate of individuals implicated in the reports.”

The US representative urged specific measures, stating, “Amend the Nigerian Press Act of 1992 to remove restrictions on the freedom of expression, specifically as it applies to online and citizen journalists.”

Responding to the raised concerns, the Attorney General of the Federation, Mr. Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, appreciated the UN Human Rights Council’s interest in Nigeria’s affairs and the recommendations.

Regarding election credibility, he emphasized, “The issue of credibility of any election in Nigeria does not arise. Election is a process, and until the Supreme Court makes any pronouncement, it cannot be regarded as having come to an end.”

A member of the Nigerian delegation, Abdulraman Yakubu, provided insights into measures adopted by Nigeria since the last review to protect human rights.

He highlighted improvements in election management processes, stating, “Our election management body has been strengthened to be independent to manage the electoral process in an open and transparent manner.”
