Connecticut authorities have launched an investigation into online gaming platform Roblox after disturbing content on the platform appeared to simulate the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.

According to CNN, Connecticut Attorney General William Tong displayed images from Roblox games that allegedly recreated scenes from the tragic school shooting during a press briefing.

The Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, which occurred in Newtown, Connecticut, on December 14, 2012, left 20 children and six adults dead, making it one of the deadliest school shootings in United States history.

The investigation forms part of growing concerns over child safety, violent online content, and the exposure of minors to disturbing material on digital platforms widely used by children and teenagers.

Tong accused Roblox of failing to adequately protect young users from harmful content and online exploitation.

“Roblox built an online pedophile playground,” the attorney general said while announcing the investigation.

Authorities said the probe would examine issues including violent game simulations, user safety measures, child protection policies, and the platform’s handling of content accessible to minors.

The investigation is also expected to review information related to users’ ages, time spent on the platform, and games allegedly linked to violent incident recreations.

Roblox, however, said it is cooperating with the investigation and highlighted efforts already in place to improve safety on the platform, including stricter parental controls, age verification systems, and enhanced moderation tools.

The development adds to increasing scrutiny facing gaming and social media platforms over concerns surrounding violent content, child exploitation, and online safety for minors.
