US rapper Fatman Scoop dies after collapsing on stage
Fatman Scoop, the popular US rapper known for his hit songs “Be Faithful” and “It Takes Scoop,” has died at the age of 53.
His family and manager announced the news on Saturday, revealing that the artist suffered a medical emergency while performing on stage, sparking an outpouring of tributes from the hip-hop community.
Scoop collapsed during a performance at Hamden Town Center Park in Connecticut. Medical staff attempted CPR on stage, as seen in a video shared by celebrity news site TMZ. Despite their efforts, he was taken to the hospital where doctors could not revive him.
His family shared the heartbreaking news on his Instagram account, writing, “It is with profound sadness and very heavy hearts that we share news of the passing of the legendary and iconic Fatman Scoop.” They continued, “Fatman Scoop was known to the world as the undisputed voice of the club. His music made us dance and embrace life with positivity.”
Scoop’s manager, Birch Michael, confirmed his death on Facebook, posting, “I love you Scoop. Thank you so much for everything you gave to me.”
Hip-hop star Missy Elliott paid tribute to him on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “Scoop’s voice and energy have contributed to many songs that made the people feel happy and want to dance for over two decades. Your impact is huge and will never be forgotten.”
Radio host Shelley Wade also remembered Scoop, sharing a photo of them together and writing, “We are losing too many of our hip-hop legends too soon. Rest easy, Scoop.”
Fatman Scoop was also known for a brief political controversy in Australia in 2018 when the country’s then-prime minister, Scott Morrison, posted a video featuring Scoop’s hit song “Be Faithful.” Morrison later deleted the post after critics argued the song’s lyrics were inappropriate. “It’s quite clear that that is not a song on my playlist,” Morrison told reporters.
Scoop responded on Instagram, saying, “I am humbled to have my voice rocking in the highest offices of the Australian Government!” He defended his song as “a fun PARTY SONG that has no NEGATIVITY or HARM in it!!” and even invited Morrison to attend a backstage event at a festival in Australia.
Fatman Scoop’s legacy as a vibrant voice in hip-hop will continue to resonate, as fans and fellow artists remember his contributions to the music world.
