French prosecutors and police on Monday confirmed the death of a newborn baby after being thrown out of a hotel window by his 18-year-old American mother.
The heartbreaking event took place at a hotel in the 20th arrondissement in eastern Paris. According to the prosecutor’s office, the young mother gave birth in a second-floor hotel room before throwing the infant out of the window.
Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene after being alerted about a baby wrapped in a cloth, with the umbilical cord still attached, lying in front of the hotel. Despite receiving urgent medical care, the baby was pronounced dead at 7:45 am at the Robert Debre hospital.
“The newborn was given emergency care but did not survive,” the prosecutors said.
The 18-year-old mother, identified as an American student, was reportedly part of a group of young adults traveling across Europe. French authorities have launched a murder investigation, and the young woman has been taken into custody.
Officials stated that the mother was also taken to the hospital for medical treatment following the birth.
Paris Match reported that the woman was on a study trip to Paris along with other students from the United States.
