US lawmakers oppose war powers resolution on Iran

Two United States representatives issued a joint statement on Friday voicing opposition to a proposed war powers resolution, arguing that it would weaken the country’s ability to counter threats from Iran.

Reps. Josh Gottheimer and Mike Lawler said the measure could hinder the United States’ capacity to respond effectively to dangers posed by Tehran.

“So long as ‘Death to America’ remains the rallying cry of the Iranian regime, Iran will remain a persistent and serious threat to our men and women in uniform, our allies, and global stability,” said Josh Gottheimer and Mike Lawler.

The two lawmakers said they oppose the Massie-Khanna War Powers Resolution, which seeks to block the use of military force against Iran without congressional authorization.

The proposal was introduced by Reps. Thomas Massie and Ro Khanna and would prohibit military action against Iran unless approved by Congress.

Gottheimer and Lawler emphasized that congressional oversight and discussion are essential.

“However, this resolution would restrict the flexibility needed to respond to real and evolving threats and risks signaling weakness at a dangerous moment,” they added.

They also stressed that lawmakers must be informed of any planned military operations in accordance with the War Powers Act.

“It is also essential that the appropriate committees are fully and promptly briefed. Congress must not limit our ability to protect Americans and our allies,” they added.
