The United States Customs and Border Protection has warned that Green Card holders with past criminal records may lose their permanent residency and be deported.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the agency reminded lawful permanent residents that having a Green Card is a privilege, not a right, and that the U.S. government has the power to revoke it if laws are broken.

“Attention Green Card Holders: Having a criminal history does not make you an upstanding lawful permanent resident,” the agency stated.

The agency added that lawful permanent residents who show up at U.S. borders or airports with a record of criminal convictions may face detention and possible removal from the country.

“Possessing a green card is a privilege, not a right. Under our nation’s laws, our government has the authority to revoke your green card if our laws are broken and abused,” the notice said.

CBP said it is committed to protecting the American people, securing the country’s borders, and strengthening its economic safety. The statement is part of a wider effort to enforce immigration laws and ensure that only those who follow the rules keep their permanent resident status.
