The United States has banned its government personnel in China from having romantic or sexual relationships with Chinese citizens, citing security concerns.
Reports indicate that the policy was implemented in January by then-US Ambassador Nicholas Burns, before he left his position. The rule applies to American diplomats, their family members, and contractors with security clearance.
Previously, only certain employees, such as security guards and local embassy staff, were restricted from relationships with US personnel. However, the new policy now covers all Chinese citizens in mainland China and Hong Kong.
The only exception is for American personnel who were already in relationships with Chinese citizens before January. They can apply for an exemption, but if their request is denied, they must either end the relationship or leave their job. Those who violate the rule will be ordered to leave China immediately.
US officials believe the rule is necessary due to security concerns, espionage risks, and foreign influence operations. In recent years, tensions between Washington and Beijing have increased over technology, trade, and national security.
Although the US State Department has not publicly confirmed the policy, insiders say it was introduced after members of Congress raised concerns that previous rules were too lenient.
Critics argue that the policy could harm diplomatic relations and infringe on personal freedoms. However, supporters believe it is necessary to protect American personnel from security threats.
The National Security Council declined to comment, and Burns, now working in the private sector, has not responded to questions about the policy.
This move is part of wider global security measures taken by the US and its allies. Recently, Taiwan banned Chinese AI services, India restricted its military from using Chinese drone parts, and Iraq criminalized same-sex relationships with harsh penalties.
The new policy marks one of the strictest relationship bans imposed on US personnel in decades.
