Famous Hollywood actor Denzel Washington has embraced a new chapter in his life by becoming a licensed minister.
The 69-year-old actor was baptised and received his minister’s licence on the same day during a special ceremony at Kelly Temple, New York City, on Saturday.
Archbishop Christopher Bryant, who officiated the baptism, shared the emotional moment on social media, calling it a “truly uplifting experience.”
Speaking during the service, Washington reflected on his spiritual journey and expressed gratitude for the milestone.
“It took a while, but I’m finally here… If [God] can do this for me, there’s nothing He can’t do for you,” he said. “The sky literally is the limit.”
Archbishop Bryant noted that Kelly Temple held deep significance for Washington, as it was a church he attended as a child.
Bryant added, “Denzel Washington testified about being filled with the Holy Spirit after visiting another church with actor Robert Townsend in the ’80s. Today marks the culmination of a lifelong journey of faith and dedication.”
Washington’s baptism and licensing to preach come as the actor continues to be open about his faith. In an earlier interview with *Esquire*, he addressed the challenges of discussing religion in the entertainment industry.
“When you see me, you see the best I could do with what I’ve been given by my Lord and Saviour. I’m unafraid,” Washington said.
He acknowledged that faith conversations in Hollywood are rare, saying, “You can’t talk like that and win Oscars. You can’t say that in this town. But I don’t care what anyone thinks. I’m free now.”
Washington, known for his roles in movies such as Training Day, The Book of Eli, Malcolm X, and Fences, has had a distinguished career spanning decades. He first rose to fame in 1982 in the medical drama St. Elsewhere and has since become one of the most respected figures in Hollywood.
Archbishop Bryant’s social media post celebrated the moment, saying, “We welcome Minister Denzel Washington into the clergy with joy and admiration. His commitment to faith and service is truly inspiring.”
