The University of Nigeria, Nsukka, has placed an immediate ban on all social events on its campuses beyond 6 p.m., following the killing of a guest during a student-organised activity.

The decision was announced in a statement signed by the Acting Public Relations Officer of the institution, Mr. Inya Egwu.

The university explained that the directive followed the death of a businessman, Chiebonam Nweze, popularly known as Power-Autos, who was stabbed during a bonfire organised by the Department of Archaeology and Heritage Studies on September 12.

“Social events of any kind will not be permitted on our campuses beyond 6:00 p.m. henceforth,” the statement read. “Henceforth, the UNN management has directed that all such activities must be held strictly during the daytime and under the supervision of the University Security Unit.”

The management described the incident as “unfortunate,” stating that the bonfire was hijacked by miscreants from a neighbouring community who instigated violence.

UNN assured students, staff, and the wider public that it remained committed to maintaining safety and preventing a repeat of such violence.

“The university management is fully committed to ensuring a safe and secure environment for all members of its community and will continue to take every necessary measure to prevent a recurrence of such incident,” the statement added.
