Doctors at the Federal Medical Centre Yola are battling to save the life of five-year-old girl reportedly raped by a yet to be identified man now on the run.

Photos portraying the lesions on the private parts of the little girl which surfaced online appeared to reveal mutilations of the girl’s genitals.

Doctors said the rape had caused severe damage to her rectum and womb and made her unable to walk.

It is not yet clear if the rapist has been apprehended.

But Dr Sexana, a paediatrician, at the hospital who first responded to the girl when she was brought in her distressed state said minor surgery was carried out to stabilize her, adding that major corrective surgery will have to be carried out by consultant paediatrics.

According to sources familiar with the incident, when the girl was rushed to the FMC Yola after they found her in a pool of blood almost lifeless it took the intervention of three specialist doctors, at the Emergency and intensive care unit of the hospital to rescue the dying girl.

Mrs Rebecca Kwabe, one of the female lead UN women mentors in the state who drew attention to the incidence said, “the girl’s condition still remains critical while calling on public-spirited individuals to come to the aid of the five-year-old victim”.

She said she was reliably informed by Dr. Sexana that the girl has been operated upon but a major corrective surgery will still have to be performed by specialists because of some complications. She explained the doctor was among the team of doctors who attended to the little girl when she was brought to the hospital almost lifeless.

Prof. Auwal Abubakar, the Chief Medical Director, of the FMC, Yola, a renowned consultant paediatric, could not be reached to speak on the rape. Calls put through to his line were unanswered and neither did he return it as at the time of filing this report.
