The players and officials of Nigeria Professional Football League side, Adamawa United were attacked by unknown gunmen on Friday night.
The bottom-placed team were heading to Lagos for an NPFL clash with 16th placed MFM FC when their bus was attacked around the Benin-Ore Expressway by 11.45pm.
Reports revealed that the footballers were robbed of their possession including phones, money and other valuable items while the bus driver was abducted.
The kidnap was confirmed by the Permanent Secretary of the state’s Ministry of Youths and Sports, Alhaji Aliyu Jada,who said that the abductors had made contact, demanding a ransom of N50 million, according to Daily Post.
Narrating the ordeal in a phot interview, Sadiq Lawan one of the players in the bus conmfiredm that there were eight assailants during the attack.
“The gunmen ordered us out, took our money and our phones. It was later we found out that our driver was taken away. We came back to Benin City.”
Sadly, the club is not the first NPFL team to face attacks of this magnitude. Recall that in 2015, five Kano Pillars players were shot while travelling to Owerri.
The Punch reports that Enyimba FC’s bus was attacked on their way for a pre-season tournament a year later.
Gunmen also attacked members of IfeanyiUbah FC in Kogi November 29, 2019, while on their way to Kano for a League clash versus Pillars.
The gunmen reportedly opened fire on the team bus, with the bus driver and a player sustaining injuries.
