The Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State, will graduate 8,157 students during its 19th convocation ceremony for the 2023/2024 academic session.
The ceremony will begin on Wednesday, March 25, with a convocation lecture to be delivered by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume.
Speaking during a press briefing on Wednesday, the acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph Ikechebelu, said that students from various faculties would receive their degrees.
As part of the event, the university will also confer honorary degrees on three distinguished individuals for their contributions to education and society. The honorees include Minister of Health, Dr. Ali Pate; President Bola Tinubu’s son, Oluwaseyi Tinubu; and industrialist, Chief Chika Emenike.
“We want to give God the glory for this opportunity,” Prof. Ikechebelu said. “About 8,157 students will be graduating this session, and they will receive degrees in different categories.”
The vice-chancellor assured the public that adequate security measures had been put in place for the event.
He also highlighted some of the challenges faced by the university, including high electricity bills and vandalism, but noted that the school had found ways to manage them.
“The university now has a steady electricity supply, but we receive between N80 million to N100 million in electricity bills because we are on Band A. It was difficult to handle this alone, so we partnered with service providers within the institution,” he said.
He added that the university had digitalised most of its activities and remained focused on academic, infrastructural, and administrative excellence.
“UNIZIK is back to its good times,” he assured.
