Veteran goalkeeper, Tom Heaton, is set to rejoin his boyhood club, Manchester United, after spending two seasons at Aston Villa,

The Atletic reported that he has agreed to join United after holding a meeting with the club this month following the expiration of his contract with the Villans.

The former England international is expected to be United’s third-choice goalkeeper as a replacement for Sergio Romero whose contract at the club expired at the end of the 2020/21 season. Heaton is said to understudy David de Gea and Dean Henderson.

Heaton began his career at the club, signing as a trainee in 2002 and making a series of appearances for the club’s youth teams before eventually moving to Cardiff City on a permanent deal eight years later.

The 35-year-old made a number of Premier League appearances for Villa in the 2019-20 Season, after leaving Burnley but fell down the pecking order to Emiliano Martinez who joined from Arsenal for £17 million last summer.

It is also understood that United’s fourth-choice keeper, Lee Grant might not extend his contract which runs out this summer as well.
