An 18-year-old student of the University of Port Harcourt, David Amakiri, has won the first Christian reality television show in Nigeria and Africa, beating eight other contestants to take home a cash prize of N1 million.
Amakiri, a 200-level Biomedical Technology student, outperformed both undergraduates and graduates in the competition, which tested the contestants on essay writing, general knowledge, politics, current affairs, medical science, and Christian religious studies.
Speaking shortly after the event in Port Harcourt, Amakiri, who hails from Kalabari in Rivers State, said he was grateful and excited about the win.
“I really prepared hard for this competition, and I’m quite humbled to have emerged the winner among other equally talented contestants,” he said. “All I can say is that I will do everything possible to live up to the high expectations.”
He also thanked the organisers and judges for creating the platform and giving young people a chance to shine.
The show, called *The Xtreme Search Reality Television Show*, was created by Psalmist Missionary Global and is the first of its kind — a Christian-based reality show focused on promoting moral values, discipline, and godliness.
The founder and president of the show, Mr. Abuoma Chuka, presented the prize to Amakiri. He said the idea came as a response to the moral decline seen in other reality shows and in society at large.
“This project offers a more meaningful alternative that positively impacts the young people, unlike other reality television shows that tend to glorify immorality,” Chuka said.
He also said the programme aims to empower both students and graduates who are struggling to find jobs.
“Many of us who are graduates recall the sacrifices we made to acquire a university education. It is deeply troubling that after such significant investment, so many graduates find themselves unemployed,” he said.
Chuka explained that contestants joined the show by applying through the website and taking part in a physical screening exercise. He also shared his plan to grow the show and increase the prize money so that more Nigerian youths can benefit.
He called on corporate bodies, government agencies, and individuals to support the programme so it can reach more people and continue promoting strong values among the youth.
