The United Nations Children’s Fund, the Nigerian Guild of Editors, and the Diamond Awards for Media Excellence will hold a one-day symposium on Tuesday at the Lagos Sheraton Hotel, Ikeja, to address the welfare and safety of Nigerian children.

The event will bring together media leaders, policymakers, and child-rights advocates to examine the country’s preparedness to safeguard its young population. It is themed, “Equipping the Nigerian Child for the Future: How Prepared Are We?”

The dialogue comes amid rising threats to children across Nigeria, including attacks on schools, malnutrition, displacement from conflicts and flooding, and other climate-related challenges.

Speakers at the symposium are expected to discuss strategies for safe learning environments, stronger child protection systems, climate resilience, and ethical media reporting focused on children.

UNICEF representatives said children continue to bear the heaviest burden of crises while contributing the least. The organisers hope the meeting will encourage evidence-based policymaking, stronger partnerships, and greater national commitment to ensuring every Nigerian child has a chance to thrive.
