The University of Calabar, has pledged to take disciplinary action against officials involved in the illegal mobilization of unqualified graduates for the National Youth Service Corps.

The university’s Pro-Chancellor, Udom Ekpoudom, a retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police, revealed on Tuesday that an investigation is underway to identify and sanction those responsible.

This development follows a statement from the NYSC on Monday, where the organization disclosed that it had uncovered 101 unqualified graduates fraudulently mobilized for the one-year mandatory youth service by the university.

The NYSC’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Eddy Megwa, stated that the fraudulent mobilizations occurred during the 2021, 2022, and 2023 service years.

In the statement, Megwa emphasized the NYSC’s commitment to ensuring that only qualified Nigerian youths, whether locally or foreign-trained, are recognized and issued NYSC certificates. The organization has since invalidated the certificates of the 101 individuals involved.

In response to the incident, Ekpoudom expressed his embarrassment and praised the NYSC for uncovering the fraud. He assured that the university is taking the necessary steps to identify the complicit staff members and hold them accountable.

“We are working to uncover the staff behind this criminal act and will deal with them accordingly. The individuals involved were not genuine students; they forged documents to secure deployment,” Ekpoudom stated.
