Several students of the University of Benin have been trapped in a three-storey building that collapsed in Ekosodin, an off-campus community mainly inhabited by the university’s students.
The collapse occurred following a heavy downpour that started in the early hours of Saturday and lasted until about 10 a.m.
A staff member of the university, who spoke to Vanguard, said, “The incident happened earlier this morning. We were on duty when we got the call, and we are now at the scene. Some people have been rescued, but others are still trapped. We are calling for more hands to ensure that the occupants are rescued. I am still at the scene.”
As of now, the university management has not released an official statement regarding the incident. Rescue operations are ongoing as efforts continue to free those still trapped in the rubble.
