The Congress Of Nigeria University Academics, University of Benin Chapter, has disassociated itself from the ongoing nationwide indefinite strike called by the Nigeria Labour Congress.

The UNIBEN CONUA described the strike as a “one-man decision” and clarified that it is not affiliated with the NLC.

The nationwide strike was announced by the NLC on Monday in response to the alleged brutality of its President, Joe Ajaero, in Imo State.

The strike has impacted human and commercial activities across the country, with various sectors complying with NLC directives.

In Edo State, where the University of Benin is located, the strike affected court proceedings, deposit banks, financial institutions, and government ministries. Private businesses, however, remained open for transactions.

The Chairman of UNIBEN CONUA, Comrade Ishaq Osagie-Eweka, emphasized that CONUA is not affiliated with the NLC, and therefore, its members are not participating in the protest.

“I wish to unequivocally state that we are not an affiliate of NLC, hence, we are not part of the protest. I call on our members to go about their lawful duties for the overall best interest of the students,” said Dr. Osagie-Eweka.

He further stated that CONUA’s objective is to promote an uninterrupted academic calendar in Nigerian universities.

While addressing the situation, he pointed out that the current administration of the Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin aligns with CONUA’s goal of maintaining a smooth and uninterrupted academic calendar in the institution.
