Uganda’s Peruth Chemutai has won the women’s Olympic 3000m steeplechase gold medal on Wednesday at the ongoing Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games in Japan.

Chemutai’s resilience gave her an edge as she overtook silver medal winner, Frerichs Courtney of the United States of America, towards the final lap of the race.

The Ugandan won the race with a National Record of 9:01.45 to become the first Ugandan’s woman to win a gold medal in the history of the Olympics.

Courtney finished with a Season Best of 9:04.79 while Kenya’s Kiyeng Hyvin took the bronze medal by finishing with a race time of 9:05.39.
