Members of Ibadan Traditional Council have given Governor Seyi Makinde a hard knock for the way his administration his handling security in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

After the end of a meeting on Sunday, the traditional rulers in a statement accused Makinde of distancing himself from the traditional institution and running a one-man-show despite the worsening insecurity.

The traditional rulers said they had made many attempts to interact with the governor on the situation in the land but that had not been possible, saying that would not have been if the governor had regards for the institution and safety of the people, The PUNCH reports.

The Alajia of Ajia in the Egbeda Local Government Area of the state, who hails from the same community as Makinde was asked to interact with and offer some advice to the governor.

They asked leaders in various communities to raise vigilante groups to stem the tide of insecurity in their domains, saying, “what is unfolding security-wise in the state capital looks fearful and raises concern among the people and the reason why all hands must be on deck.”

According to Oba Lekan Balogun, the council has nothing against Makinde. The people simply need adequate security he said, while urging the governor to adjust his approach and include traditional institutions in his plans for adequate security.

He said, “The issue of security needs a multi-dimensional approach and there’s no way government alone can solve or handle it. As the closest institution to the people, we have crucial roles to play to ensure that the menace of insecurity is tackled and that is the more reason why there must be collaboration between us and the government to avoid working at cross-purposes.”
