Copa America: Vargas cancels Messi’s opener as Chile hold Argentina
Argentina began their Copa America campaign with a 1-1 draw in their Group B opener against Chile at the Olympic Stadium in Brazil on Monday night.
Coming off a 1-1 draw in their World Cup Qualifier match two weeks ago, Barcelona’s Lionel Messi, again put the Argentines ahead in the 33rd minute, though not through a penalty.
Messi has now been involved in 124 goal contributions (73 goals and 51 assists) in 151 Argentina appearances for the Argentine national team since making his senior debut in August 2005.
The Chileans fought back in the second half and pulled one back through Eduardo Vargas in the 57th minute as both teams settled for a point apiece, despite having a combined nine shots on target.
