The United Nations is set to appoint Nickolay Mladenov, the current UN Middle East envoy, as its new Libya envoy.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Friday informed the Security Council of his intent to appoint the Bulgarian diplomat as his special envoy to Libya, in a letter.
Mladenov would also lead the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), the UN political mission in the country.
The 15-member council is not expected to raise any objections to the pick.
Mladenov is set to replace Ghassan Salame, from Lebanon, who unexpectedly quit in March after two-and-a-half years on the job, citing health reasons.
Stephanie Williams, a Middle East specialist from the U.S., has been the acting special representative since March.
Libya has been in turmoil since long-time ruler Moamer Gaddafi was toppled in 2011.
The country became a proxy battleground for rival forces and foreign powers have been drawn into the conflict. (dpa/NAN)
