UK varsities secure operational licence in Nigeria

Published

The London Academy of Business School, in collaboration with the University of Sunderland in the United Kingdom, has been granted a licence by the National University Commission to operate in Nigeria.

With the license, the varsities will begin academic sessions in January 2024.

Dr. Derek Watson, an associate professor from the Faculty of Business Law at the London Academy of Business School, announced this on Wednesday following after a meeting with the Acting Executive Secretary of the NUC, Chris Maiyaki, in Abuja.

Watson said the University of Sunderland’s value of academic excellence will be replicated in Nigeria.

Watson said, “We were the first UK university to market. What we have agreed on today is the criticality of following the compliance procedures.

“In addition to that, we would source credible academics to deliver our programs from LABs who are qualified teachers and also practicing consultants. The student will get the same experience as those students studying in England.”

The first academic session is set to commence in January 2024 at the Public Service Institute of Nigeria in Abuja.

Dr. Watson assured that LAB would adhere to the NUC’s guidelines and environmental regulations, ensuring a quality educational experience for Nigerian students.

The President/Director of Studies at the London Academy of Business School, Dr. Larry Jones-Esan, expressed hope that this recognition would lead to the rapid establishment of the university to begin in January 2024.

During their visit, the team also inspected the facilities at the Public Service Institute of Nigeria in Abuja, which will serve as a study center.

Abdul-Ganiyu Obatayinbo, the Administrator and CEO of the institute, praised the institute’s environment, stating that it surpassed the facilities available to the University of Sunderland in the UK.

Courses at the undergraduate level will include computer science, business and management, and network system engineering, among others, while offerings at the master’s level will include business administration, international business management, and education leadership, among others.
