A Daily Mail correspondent has attributed the fatal accident involving boxer Anthony Joshua to poor driving culture in Nigeria, not road infrastructure.

United Kingdom journalist Nick Pisa, visiting the scene on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, stated that while the road is well-constructed with few potholes and comparable to UK standards, driving behavior is “terrible.” He cited reckless speeding, overloaded trucks, and careless pedestrian crossings as critical dangers.

“The irony is that the road itself is good enough that highways in the UK would be proud of,” Pisa said, stressing the problem lies with discipline, not the road.

The accident, which occurred on December 29, 2025, near Sagamu, claimed the lives of Joshua’s close friends and trainer, Sina Ghami, and Latif Ayodele. Their bodies have been flown out of Nigeria for repatriation.

The Federal Road Safety Corps confirmed that excessive speeding and wrongful overtaking by the driver of Joshua’s Lexus Jeep caused the crash into a stationary truck. Joshua and one other sustained minor injuries and have since been discharged from the hospital.

The driver, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, was arraigned on Friday at a Sagamu Magistrate Court. He faces four counts including dangerous driving causing death, reckless driving, and driving without a valid license. The court granted him bail set at ₦5 million with two sureties and adjourned the case to January 20, 2026. He was remanded pending the fulfilment of his bail conditions.
