Grief has spread across the Nigerian and UK nursing communities after a Nigerian nurse, Nnena Miriam, was found dead in her apartment in Leeds, United Kingdom.
Miriam, a dedicated health worker, had been reported missing by a close friend after she failed to show up for work and did not answer several phone calls. The police later found her lifeless body in her home.
Fellow Nurses Africa, a group that supports African nurses, confirmed the sad news in a statement released on Wednesday.
“It is with heavy hearts and deep sorrow that we report the sudden passing of one of our own, Nnena Miriam, a dedicated and professional nurse based in Leeds, United Kingdom,” the group stated.
They added, “Nurse Miriam was found dead in her room earlier this week under heartbreaking circumstances. According to reports, her last shift was on Sunday of last week.
“Alarm bells were raised when her close friend tried reaching out to her repeatedly from that Sunday without success. Growing increasingly worried, the friend filed a missing person report—only for the police to later discover her lifeless body in her apartment.”
It was also revealed that Miriam had just returned to the UK from Nigeria, where she held her introduction ceremony ahead of her traditional wedding.
“Tuesday, April 29, was meant to be her special day — a day of joy, celebration, and new beginnings,” the statement added. “Instead, her sudden death has left colleagues and loved ones overwhelmed with unspeakable grief and unanswered questions.”
Her co-workers described her as a kind, hardworking, and compassionate nurse who cared deeply for her patients.
“Her untimely passing is a profound loss to the healthcare family she served with pride and to the many patients whose lives she touched with care and compassion,” the group wrote.
The cause of her death has not been confirmed, but investigations are ongoing.
This sad event comes just over a year after another Nigerian woman, Chidimma Ezenyili, died in the UK. She collapsed while attending to an elderly client and passed away two days later.
As the investigation continues, tributes continue to pour in for Nurse Miriam, whose death has left many heartbroken.
