UK appoints new minister of interior in cabinet reshuffle

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Monday appointed a new minister of interior, former Prime Minister David Cameron.

This move comes after Sunak removed controversial Interior Minister Suella Braverman from her position in a significant Cabinet reshuffle marking Sunak’s first major reorganization since becoming the country’s leader on October 25, 2022.

Cameron, who served as prime minister from 2010 to 2016, will take on the role of foreign secretary.

The move is seen as an attempt to strengthen Sunak’s team ahead of an anticipated general election next year.

Braverman known for her right-wing stance and divisive rhetoric, faced growing pressure, especially following her recent comments accusing the police of bias during pro-Palestinian demonstrations.

Braverman responded to her dismissal by saying, “It has been the greatest privilege of my life to serve as home secretary,” and added, “I will have more to say in due course.”

The party confirmed the ongoing reshuffle, stating, “Today @RishiSunak strengthens his team in government to deliver long-term decisions for a brighter future. Stay tuned for the latest.”

The changes are expected to reward loyalists and emerging younger Members of Parliament as the Conservatives grapple with declining popularity after nearly 14 years in power.
