Students at the University of Ibadan in Oyo State are protesting against a new policy that introduces a 10-hour daily electricity supply on campus.

The protest began yesterday and continued into this morning, according to DAILY POST.

The new electricity schedule was announced in a memo from the university’s Department of Works and Maintenance, dated July 16, 2024.

The memo, signed by the Director of Works, Engineer O.A. Adetolu, states, “Effective immediately, the Vice-Chancellor has approved 10-hour daily electricity supply on Campus as follows: Day Time: 08 a.m. – 02 p.m. (6 hours) Night Time: 10 p.m. – 02 a.m. (4 hours). Kindly adhere strictly to the approved schedule. Thank you.”

Students are outraged by the new policy. One student, who wished to remain anonymous, said, “There was a protest yesterday night that lasted till about 2 am today. The University of Ibadan introduced the notice that it would start rationing a 10-hour electricity distribution on campus.”

The student also mentioned other issues contributing to the unrest, including a significant increase in fees and the introduction of new charges. “This follows an outrageous increment in fees, introduction of inexplicable and duplicated fees like a utility levy, which is 20,000 naira, among other unconscionable fees,” the student said.

The protests are ongoing as students continue to express their dissatisfaction with the new electricity policy and the additional fees imposed by the university.
