Mr Goodluck Akinlawon a student of the University of Ibadan, has won the 2025 Amnesty International Nigeria Inter-Varsity Debate, beating contenders from 15 other universities across the country.
Held under the theme “Empowering Voices, Inspiring Change,” the competition featured students from all six geopolitical zones of Nigeria.
In a statement on Friday, Mr Isa Sanusi, Country Director of Amnesty International Nigeria, announced that Mr Odebala Odemena of Baze University, Abuja, came second, while Mr Alexander Boroh of the University of Benin took third place.
“This debate continues to grow in impact and reach each year,” said Mr Sanusi. “As a global human rights organisation, Amnesty International is committed to empowering young people to shape the discourse around justice, accountability, and human dignity.”
He also emphasised the role of young people in challenging injustice. “Ending the culture of silence begins with the youth understanding they have a right to speak — and to be heard,” he added.
The debate, now in its third year, featured structured rounds where participants tackled issues of justice, dignity, and human rights.
Other participating universities included University of Lagos, Obafemi Awolowo University, Landmark University, University of Port Harcourt, Enugu State University of Science and Technology, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Usman Dan Fodio University, Ahmadu Bello University, Modibbo Adama University of Technology, Gombe State University, University of Maiduguri, and Benue State University.
