Ugandan police foil churches’ bombings

Published

President Yoweri Museveni said on Sunday that Ugandan police prevented a bomb plot by the rebel group Allied Democratic Forces against churches near Kampala.

The ADF, which has sworn loyalty to the Islamic State group, had made two bombs and planned to plant them in churches in Kibibi, Butambala, about 50 kilometres from the capital. However, the police were alerted and defused the bombs, Museveni said on X (formerly Twitter).

Museveni also said on Sunday that Ugandan forces had launched air strikes on ADF bases in neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo.

He said many terrorists were killed in the attacks but did not give details. He warned that the ADF might try to carry out random terrorist acts in Uganda in retaliation for the airstrikes.

This is not the first time Ugandan police have thwarted a bomb attack by the ADF. In September, they arrested a man who tried to activate a bomb in a cathedral in Kampala.

In June, ADF fighters killed 42 people, including 37 students, in a western Uganda school near the DR Congo border.

The ADF is one of the most violent rebel groups in DR Congo and has been active since the 1990s. According to a UN report in June, ISIS has been providing financial support to the ADF since at least 2019.
