Barcelona produced a stunning second-half performance to demolish Newcastle United 7-2 at the Camp Nou, advancing to the Champions League quarter-finals with an emphatic 8-3 aggregate victory .

The La Liga giants, who drew 1-1 at St James’ Park in the first leg, unleashed an attacking masterclass that left the Premier League side humiliated on one of European football’s biggest stages .

Raphinha opened the scoring for Barcelona in the sixth minute, coolly finishing after playing a one-two with Fermin Lopez . Newcastle responded quickly through Anthony Elanga, who drew the visitors level from close range after getting on the end of Lewis Hall’s drilled cross .

Barcelona retook the lead through 18-year-old Marc Bernal, who hooked the ball past Aaron Ramsdale after Gerard Martin headed Raphinha’s free-kick back across goal . However, Newcastle equalised once again when Harvey Barnes picked out Elanga at the back post, with the Swedish forward finishing first-time to stun the Camp Nou crowd .

Just before half-time, Barcelona were awarded a penalty after a VAR intervention penalised Kieran Trippier for pulling Raphinha back inside the box. Lamine Yamal, also 18, stepped up and scored from the spot, making it 3-2 on the night .

The floodgates opened after the restart. Fermin Lopez made it 4-2 in the 51st minute after racing onto Raphinha’s exquisite first-time pass and slotting past Ramsdale .

Robert Lewandowski then took over, heading home from Raphinha’s corner in the 56th minute before grabbing another with a drilled finish five minutes later .

Raphinha completed the demolition in the 72nd minute, capitalising on a sloppy pass from Newcastle substitute Jacob Ramsey to score his second of the game and make it 7-2 on the night .

The final statistics reflected Barcelona’s dominance: 18 shots to Newcastle’s eight, 13 shots on target to five, and 63 per cent possession . Barcelona’s expected goals (xG) stood at 4.29 compared to Newcastle’s 1.52 .

Newcastle United correspondent Chris Waugh described the result as a “sad end to a good Newcastle journey,” noting that while the scoreline was embarrassing, the Magpies had taken great strides in the competition across the 2025-26 season .

La Liga correspondent Dermot Corrigan highlighted the significance of Barcelona’s victory, pointing out that the starting XI featured three academy graduates under 20—Cubarsi (19), Bernal (18), and Lamine Yamal (18)—along with three other youth-team products .

“For a side so heavily reliant on their own youth products to inflict such a heavy defeat on a Newcastle team built by Saudi owners and Premier League riches seems especially significant,” Corrigan noted .

Barcelona will face either Atletico Madrid or Tottenham Hotspur in the quarter-finals. Atletico hold a 5-2 advantage from the first leg, making them strong favourites to progress .
