UCH recalls off-duty staff to attend to Ibadan explosion victims

Published

The University College Hospital Ibadan, the city’s largest health facility, has issued a call for its off-duty personnel to promptly return to work on Tuesday.

This decision, as reported by the News Agency of Nigeria, was prompted by the surge in the number of individuals injured during Tuesday’s explosion who were subsequently brought to the hospital.

According to Vanguard, a health worker, speaking anonymously, confirmed that the UCH administration instructed staff to report to the hospital to provide assistance to the victims.

“They said more hands were needed to attend to those being brought in, and they were not sure of the number that can still come in later during the evening or early in the morning of Wednesday,” the worker said.

Another UCH staff member revealed the hospital’s specific concern for individuals who might seek admission due to the “after effects” of the explosion.

The focus extended beyond those immediately affected, considering potential cases of shock, especially among individuals with pre-existing conditions like high blood pressure and hypertension.

This category of victims may experience health issues not directly related to physical injuries but stemming from the emotional impact of the incident.

In related developments, casualties from the explosion were reported at the boarding school affiliated with All Souls School in the Bodija area of the city. Affected victims were urgently transferred to UCH for immediate medical attention on Tuesday night.

Contrary to rumors, the Director of Public Relations at the University of Ibadan, Mrs. Joke Akinpelu, denied any building collapses within the university premises resulting from the explosion. “There was nothing of such in the University of Ibadan. No building collapse has been recorded here,” Akinpelu clarified.
