The Budo Mosalasi community witnessed the arrest of two alleged members of an international ammunition trafficking syndicate, according to the police.
In a statement released on Friday, the command’s spokesperson, Ayanlade Olayinka, identified the suspects as 35-year-old Isiaka Dare and 33-year-old Taiwo Ayodabo.
They are accused of illegally transporting weapons from the Benin Republic into Nigeria.
Mr. Olayinka explained that officers from the command monitoring unit at the Saki Operation Base apprehended the suspects during a coordinated intelligence-led operation.
“Investigation so far reveals that the suspects operate across international terrain, trafficking ammunition illegally from the Republic of Benin into Nigeria through unauthorised border routes.
“Their criminal enterprise involves the clandestine importation and distribution of prohibited ammunition to unauthorised individuals within the country—arms and ammunition which may ultimately be deployed in the commission of armed robbery, banditry, kidnapping, and other violent crimes,” Mr. Olayinka stated.
The police spokesperson said the operatives recovered 105 packets of pump-action cartridges hidden in four jerry cans—each containing 25 cartridges—totaling 2,625 rounds, alongside two unregistered motorcycles.
According to Mr. Olayinka, both suspects have confessed and are cooperating with investigators to map out the broader transnational network and identify additional collaborators.
The Femi Haruna, the state commissioner of police, directed that the suspects be prosecuted once the investigation concludes. He also commended local residents for providing timely and credible intelligence that led to the arrests.
