Two security guards, Wilfred John and Tunde Atatero, both aged 32, have been sentenced to two years in prison each for stealing properties from Ivory Exclusive Hotel in Gbagada, Lagos.
The Lagos State Magistrates’ Court sitting in Yaba delivered the verdict on Monday.
The two men were charged with 18 counts of stealing but pleaded guilty to 12 of the charges. Magistrate A.O. Salawu, who presided over the case, sentenced them to two years imprisonment, noting that the convicts “saved the time of the court” by pleading guilty, which helped avoid a longer trial.
The incident took place on February 28, 2024, at Ivory Exclusive Hotel. According to the prosecutor, Godwin Oriabure, the stolen items included four Midea air conditioners worth N1,920,000. He also stated that the offence violated Section 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
One of the charges against the convicts read, “That you, Wilfred John, Tunde Atatero, and others at large on February 28, 2024, at Ivory Exclusive Hotel, Ifako, Gbagada, Lagos, did conspire to commit felony, namely stealing, and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.”
The court ruled that both men would serve their two-year sentence without individual sentencing for each count due to their cooperation with the court.
