Two pilots have been confirmed dead after a fighter jet belonging to the Indian Air Force crashed in the northeastern Indian state of Assam, authorities said.
The aircraft reportedly lost contact shortly after it departed from Jorhat in Assam on Thursday evening.
In a statement issued Friday morning, the Indian Air Force confirmed that the two pilots on board suffered fatal injuries in the crash.
“All personnel of the IAF express sincere condolences and stand firmly with the bereaved families in this time of grief,” the air force said in a statement on US social media company X.
Earlier on Friday, the air force disclosed that the Su-30MKI fighter aircraft — originally developed by Russia — had been on a routine training mission when it went down in the Karbi Anglong district of Assam.
Following the incident, authorities initiated a search and rescue operation.
