Two men have died in a tragic incident in Bazabe village, Albasu Local Government Area of Kano State, while trying to retrieve a mobile phone that fell into a pit toilet.

The victims, both 40 years old, were identified as Usman Muhammed and Ibrahim Inuwa. The Kano State Fire Service confirmed that they suffocated inside the pit latrine on Saturday, June 22.

In a statement released on Sunday, the Public Relations Officer of the fire service, Alhaji Saminu Abdullahi, explained how the sad event happened.

He said, “We received an emergency call at Takai fire station from one Inspector Auwalu at about 11:16 am that two men were trapped in a pit latrine. We immediately sent out our rescue team to the scene.”

According to him, the first victim, Muhammed, had accidentally dropped his phone into the pit and went in to retrieve it. When he did not come out, Inuwa tried to rescue him by tying a rope around himself and entering the pit as well.

“Unfortunately, the second man also got trapped,” Abdullahi said.

The fire service team managed to pull both men out of the toilet, but they were already unconscious. They were rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors confirmed them dead.

The incident has been reported to the Divisional Police Office in Albasu for further investigation.
