Two people were killed and seven others were injured in a recent clash between the Ndeji and Lema communities in the Lafiagi Emirate, Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State.

The conflict, which erupted over a long-standing land dispute, took place between the communities located between Gbugbu and Lafiagi. The dispute has frequently caused tension and violence.

Sources in the area revealed to the PUNCH that the clash was triggered by rumors that a community leader was planning to give the disputed land to the Lema community.

This rumor heightened fears among the Ndeji people and led to violent confrontations.

One source said, “The fight started when there was a rumor that the Emir of Lafiagi was planning to give the land to the Lema people. Our people, who are from the Nupe tribe, believe in charms, which fueled the violence.”

The two victims, identified as Mohammed Alhaji and Aliu Hussain, reportedly died while trying to protect an Imam in their community. One of the victims was a student at Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin.

Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Victor Olaiya, confirmed the incident. He said, “Yes, it is true that there was a communal clash between the two communities. Two people were killed and about seven were injured. The injured have been taken to the hospital for treatment.”

Olaiya assured the public that the situation is under control. “We want to assure members of the public of the safety of their lives and property. The perpetrators are in our custody, and an investigation is ongoing,” he added.
