An Air Canada Express aircraft was involved in a collision with a ground vehicle shortly after touching down at LaGuardia Airport late Sunday, marking the latest incident in a string of aviation events drawing increased safety scrutiny.
Authorities said the plane struck a vehicle operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, according to the New York Police Department.
Following the collision, incoming flights to LaGuardia were halted from locations across the United States and Canada.
Officials have not confirmed whether there were injuries.
Adverse weather conditions earlier in the evening had already disrupted operations at the airport. Unverified images circulating on social media appeared to show an Air Canada aircraft tipped backward with significant damage to its nose, though Bloomberg could not confirm their authenticity.
Data from Flightradar24 indicated that Flight AC8646 departed Montréal and landed at LaGuardia at 23:37 local time. Records show the aircraft involved was a 20-year-old CRJ-900LR regional jet.
Neither Air Canada nor the Port Authority, which manages the airport, immediately responded to inquiries outside regular business hours. The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board also did not provide immediate comment.
The incident adds to a troubling period for global aviation, following several serious accidents that made the past year one of the deadliest in recent memory. Among them was a United Parcel Service cargo plane crash shortly after takeoff from Louisville, Kentucky, in November.
In another tragedy, an Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner crash in June—occurring moments after departure—left only one survivor among the 242 people on board. Earlier, in January 2025, an American Airlines Group flight collided with a US Army helicopter near Washington, resulting in one of the most severe aviation disasters in the country in decades.
The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed that LaGuardia would remain closed to incoming traffic from 00:04 to 01:30 local time, noting that the restriction could be extended beyond that window.
