Two people were killed and another wounded in a shooting at South Carolina State University, a historically Black university in the southern United States, officials said on Friday.
The shooting occurred around 9:15 pm Thursday at the Hugine Suites student residential complex, the university said in a statement.
School officials have not confirmed the victims’ identities or the condition of the wounded person. The campus remains on lockdown, and Friday classes were cancelled.
This marks at least the third shooting on the campus since October. According to ABC News, two shootings in October included one at the same student housing complex, which left one person dead and another wounded.
Local law enforcement agencies are assisting the university in patrolling on and around the campus. Officials did not say whether anyone has been taken into custody.
The university is located in Orangeburg, about 40 miles south of South Carolina’s capital Columbia, and has an enrollment of around 3,000 students.
Thursday’s violence comes days after an 18-year-old shooter killed eight people at a secondary school and residence in British Columbia, Canada. In December, a gunman killed two people and wounded nine others inside a classroom at Brown University in Rhode Island.
According to the non-profit Gun Violence Archive, there were more than 1,000 gun deaths in the United States in the first month of 2026, with 28 mass shootings recorded as of February 2.
