A school bus crash on the UK motorway has tragically resulted in the loss of a 14-year-old schoolgirl’s life and that of the coach driver, according to local Police.
The incident occurred when the bus collided with a car and overturned, leaving 13 children hospitalized, with two of them in critical condition, as confirmed by the police during a press conference.
The coach, carrying 54 passengers, was transporting students from West Kirby all-girls grammar school and Calday Grange all-boys grammar school in Merseyside.
Out of the children hospitalized, 39 have already been discharged, while the others have been taken to the hospital for further medical attention.
Specialist support is being extended to the families affected by this devastating incident.
Additionally, trauma support is being put in place for both the pupils directly involved and students from both schools who were on other buses traveling in convoy and witnessed the accident.
Chief Superintendent Graeme Robson expressed condolences, stating, “Our thoughts and condolences are very much with their family and friends at this tragic time.”
Witnesses reported that children managed to escape through the bus’s back window and were standing on the hard shoulder after the accident. Emergency services, including Merseyside Fire and Rescue, helped passengers escape the debris.
The bus, belonging to Carvers Coaches of Ellesmere Port, was en route to the two grammar schools and was traveling in convoy with two other school buses at the time of the accident. No other vehicles were involved.
