A multiple-vehicle crash involving a truck has resulted in the death of two persons and left three others with critical injuries near the Meiran Primary Health Centre in Lagos, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority has confirmed.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, disclosed in a statement on Wednesday that the accident occurred along Iyana Meiran, inward Meiran Road, after a Dangote Silo Mixer Truck reportedly lost control as a result of brake failure while moving at high speed.
“The runaway truck forcefully collided with a commercial mini-bus, popularly called Korope, as well as four tricycles.
The impact caused severe damage and trapped commuters inside the mangled vehicles,” Bakare-Oki stated.
According to him, the driver of the truck abandoned the scene immediately after the collision.
He explained that LASTMA personnel, supported by nearby residents, swiftly carried out rescue operations and successfully freed three victims who were trapped in the wreckage before conveying them to Mobonke Hospital for emergency treatment.
“All injured victims were promptly evacuated and are receiving intensive medical attention,” Bakare-Oki said.
Bakare-Oki further revealed that officers from the Meiran Police Division were notified and responded promptly to the incident.
“The Divisional Police Officer personally led his team to secure the area and ensure the safety of responders while preventing secondary collisions,” he added.
The LASTMA boss cautioned motorists against speeding and urged strict adherence to government-approved speed limits, stressing that excessive speed and mechanical faults are avoidable factors in many fatal road crashes.
He also expressed sympathy to the families of those who lost their lives in the accident and wished the injured victims a quick recovery.
