The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed an accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway that claimed two lives and left five others severely injured.
The crash, which happened around 7:15 a.m. on Sunday, occurred near Danco Filling Station. It involved a Toyota Sienna space bus with registration number EPE 430 HT, driven by Adewale Yusuf, and a stationary luxury bus belonging to Young Shall Grow Transport Company with plate number KTU 835 XY, driven by Chukwudi Ilo from Anambra State.
According to the state police spokesperson, Chief Superintendent of Police Omolola Odutola, the accident happened when the luxury bus stopped in traffic due to a minor crash ahead. The Toyota Sienna, which was coming at high speed, lost control and rammed into the back of the stationary bus.
“As a result, five passengers in the Sienna bus sustained severe injuries and were rushed to Live Well Hospital, Sagamu,” Odutola said. “Sadly, two male passengers, identified as Charles Izuchukwu, a staff member of Babcock University, and another unidentified man, succumbed to their injuries at the hospital.”
She added that the bodies of the deceased were deposited at Last Home Green Mortuary in Sagamu, while the driver of the Sienna and two other injured passengers are receiving medical care.
Police officers from the Motor Traffic Department (MTD) arrived at the scene promptly, documented the accident, and cleared the wreckage to restore traffic flow. Both vehicles have been taken to the MTD office in Sagamu for further investigation and inspection by the Vehicle Inspection Officers.
The police command has warned that reckless driving, speeding, and negligence are major causes of road crashes.
“Factors like driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, use of expired or substandard tires, lack of focus, and disregard for traffic rules significantly contribute to accidents,” Odutola said.
The command urged all motorists, especially commercial drivers, to drive cautiously, obey speed limits, and avoid reckless behavior that puts lives at risk.
“Drivers must avoid substance abuse and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before setting out on any journey,” Odutola added.
She also stated that the police would continue enforcing traffic laws to reduce accidents, warning that any driver caught violating road safety rules would face legal consequences.
The public has been encouraged to report reckless drivers and unsafe road conditions to the nearest police station or road safety officers.
