A boat accident on Sunday has left at least one person dead and another missing in Jigawa State, according to the spokesperson for the State Police Command, Lawan Adam.
The tragic incident happened when 20 traders were traveling from Kwalgai in Auyo Local Government Area to Hadin in Kaugama LGA, and their boat capsized.
Mr. Adam reported that local divers and police quickly responded to the accident, rescuing most of the passengers.
“The rescue team was able to rescue eighteen (18) passengers alive, while two (2) female passengers were still missing,” Mr. Adam stated.
One of the missing individuals, identified as 18-year-old Habiba Ado from Kwalgai community, was found alive but later died at a hospital in Auyo.
“Later, the last woman was discovered and found dead. In other words, the death rate has increased to two (2).
Preliminary investigations by the police revealed that the accident was caused by powerful waves and overloading, which led to the boat’s driver losing control.
